The igaming sector in Pennsylvania had near-record performance in August, contributing to a year-on-year and month-on-month gain in gambling income for the state.
Income from Pennsylvania's casinos In August, Pennsylvania's total gaming revenue reached $525.5 million (£397.1 million/€472.1 million). There was a 14.9% increase from last year and a 4.9% increase from July of this year.
Growth of online gambling in Pennsylvania
Igaming revenue reached $183.7m in August, making it the most notable statistic. This is the second-highest monthly total ever, behind only March 2024's $191.1m haul, and it's up 29% from last year as well.
To break it down, in August, online slots brought in $138.3 million, which is all of the igaming revenue. Table games brought in $43.2 million, with poker bringing in more over $2.2 million for the month.
The Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course continues to dominate this industry, as it has for some years. The company's online casino brought in $72.1 million in August. Second place goes to Rivers Casino Philadelphia with $30.8 million, followed by Valley Forge Casino Resort with $46.0 million.
Income from sports betting reaches $45.4m in August
The sports betting segment contributed $45.4m to the overall income, which was up 48.4% year-over-year but down 13.9% from July. For the month, taxable revenue was $30.0m after promotional credits.
The total revenue from online betting was $25.5 million, with $4.5 million coming from retail.
In August, the total amount wagered in Pennsylvania on sporting events was $485.3 million. With an online handling of $457.6m and retail of $27.7m, this is a 23.5% increase from previous year.
A total market hold of 9.4 percent was the result for the month. Among the two types of sales, 9.0% occurred online and 16.2% in retail.
When it comes to operators, the clear winner is FanDuel, which is partnering with Pennsylvania's Valley Forge Casino Resort. It had a 10.4 percent hold in August, with $176.5 million in bets resulting in $13.3 million in total income.
Second place went to DraftKings and its Meadows partner, Hollywood Casino. The partnership's gross income was $7.8 million, with a handle of $124.4 million, for a monthly hold of 9.1 percent.
Where else in Pennsylvania did these events take place?
When compared to other market sectors, land-based slots continue to generate the majority of Pennsylvania's gaming revenue. This year's total of $211.1m is up 3.9% over the previous year. But, sales of physical table games fell 2.1% to $81.0m.
Fantasy sports saw a decline of 18.3% to $647,522, whilst video gaming terminal income increased by 5.7% to $3.7m.
