The Okada Manila integrated resort complex was repossessed by Universal Entertainment, the parent company of casino operator Tiger Resort, Leisure and Entertainment Inc (TRLEI), following a standoff with the business's former CEO and founder, Kazuo Okada.
Kazuo Okada of Okada Manila Universal Entertainment Corporation was first removed from his positions as chief executive officer, director, chair, and stockholder of TRLEI in 2017 over allegations of alleged "misappropriation" of cash.
But the Supreme Court of the Philippines restored Kazuo Okada to his previous roles in April 2022 with a status quo ante order.
After the court's ruling, TRLEI and Universal Entertainment claimed that the resort had been "violently entered and occupied" by Kazuo Okada and others. Along with one of the individuals, Dindo Espeleta, the company said that over fifty police officers and private security guards were also there.
In light of these developments, TRLEI threatened to press criminal charges against Okada, which the billionaire vehemently disputed. Also, the leadership conflict postponed TRLEI's NASDAQ stock exchange listing. Also postponed were Universal Entertainment's second quarter earnings.
On Friday, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), a government-owned gaming company, withdrew its recognition of the board appointed by Kazuo Okada, ending the months-long standoff.
Staff from Universal Entertainment, backed by the Philippines National Police, took over Okada Manila on September 2nd.
When the full scope of Universal Entertainment's operations became clear, security personnel loyal to Kazuo Okada reportedly retreated to the casino's underground parking garage.
According to Universal Entertainment, "the transition was generally peaceful" notwithstanding a little altercation involving Kazuo Okada's self-appointed board and their attempt to prevent government officials from accessing Okada Manila.
Assisting the PAGCOR representatives in carrying out the order were personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Antonio "Tonyboy" Cojuangco, a prominent supporter of the Okada, commanded the installed board that was forced out of the premises.
Investors are "assumed" to have been "destroyed contracts and other evidential documents, taken outside the company without permission, wrongfully seized some real assets... and falsified digital data," according to a statement from Universal Entertainment, which was addressed to the matter by Kazuo Okada and his group.
Soon after, Universal Ent announced that it will be looking into the issue and how it may affect the company's financial accounts.
While the Court of Appeals investigates the matter, the ruling that the Supreme Court of the Philippines issued maintaining the status quo ante is still in force. Currently, Okada is still serving as a director at TRLEI.
